Silver?
Yes, the silver mentioned in the previous article is the same silver found in jewelry and silverware. Throughout history, silver has not only been used for jewelry, but also as an antimicrobial. In ancient times, it was discovered that wine, milk, and water could be stored for longer periods of time with silver lined vessels. The history of silver as a pharmaceutical agent has been described in historical literature from as long ago as 1000BC. Today, silver is used in a variety of forms of medicinal treatment. For example, silver nitrate and silver sulphadiazine are used as topical treatments for wounds, especially in burn therapy. In addition, many medical applications, including catheters, wound care devices and implanted material are treated with silver to reduce the risk of infection. These many examples serve to highlight both the safety and proven efficacy of its antimicrobial nature.
Three years of research and development work went into the decision to include AlphaSan into Manitwoc ice machines. This work included application development, extensive laboratory testing, life cycle testing, and dealer surveys all completed by Manitowoc and Milliken Chemical, the supplier of AlphaSan. After successfully incorporating AlphaSan into the plastic components, achieving favorable laboratory data, observing dramatic life cycle testing results, and better understanding end-user demand, the decision to use AlphaSan was very easy.
